Scores for Purple Moon

Ideas: 1

There is no writing at all on this child's paper, only drawing. The child has dictated the label, but it is not a sentence. "Lots of suns and a purple moon" is the label.

Organization: 1

The child has attempted no writing. There is a sense of story to the picture. The pictures are generally spaced without overlapping.

Voice: 1

There is feeling and energy communicated by the variety of colors. There is voice in the smiling faces of the suns and moon. The child is drawing things of importance to himself, with no regard for an audience.

Word Choice: 1

The child uses no letters and is not imitating word patterns. The pictures do stand for an idea. There is no environmental print copied. Word choice will not normally appear in writing until there is a sense of words as representative of spoken language and ideas.

Sentence Fluency: 1

The child does not mimic the use of writing across the page. There is no pattern for sentences, even in the dictated label. There is no sense of sentence, because there is no sense of writing as representative of spoken language. Conventions: 1

The child is not writing letter strings or attempting to create standard letters. The student needs to interpret the picture for us.

Scribble, Purple Moon, and Repetitive Picture all have the same scores, but you can see that they do not all represent the same level of writing development. It is important to make notes of what the child is able to do, as well as scoring on the traits. Copies of a child's work should be kept in a portfolio and brought out during the year to show the child, the parents, and remind ourselves, of the advances the child makes in writing.
