The kids have a writing folder that they keep alll year. All copies and brainstorming are in here. = I also don't always grade everything....sometimes I use the check method to = see that the assignment was done. We make (publish) a few books a year. The students choose which piece to publish and that one goes home. At the end = of the year, the kids have a choice of whether to take their folder home or = not. Most choose not to. Some kids REALLY like to write and choose to take = theirs home to work on their creations more!! That always excites me. Billie/5/ohio ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: Re: Young Authors From: "Julia Poor" Date: Mon, 21 Jun 1999 10:43:16 -0500 In the spring of the year, our school combines with two other elementary schools in our district for a Young Authors' Conference. The kids write = and publish what they think is their best work, either something new or something they want to polish and publish. They take that work with them = to the conference and share it with a small group of students. At the conference we usually have an author, sometimes an illustrator ( one year = we had someone that worked with Jim Davis on the Garfield cartoons), and some type of entertainer. This year, we had a magician. This year we took our whole school, no exceptions. The kids have a great time, and it means something to them to be able to share their work with their peers. I've heard some remarkable stories of coincidence and interest as some buddies have written me. Thanks to Susan S. and Shelley from Bakersfield for their donations. We have enough to pay for three months of the list, now, but not the website, yet. I'm very excited about our beginnings. This is a terrific group of teachers and I feel that we are starting something special here. I will be leaving on my camping trip tomorrow. Take good care of each other and stay positive. We need to support each other, so we have what = we need to support our students. =3D) Susan Nixon 2nd Grade Phoenix, AZ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: THT site From: Susan Nixon <susan@desertskyone.com> Date: Mon, 21 Jun 1999 13:49:24 -0700 >ALso, get them to regularly visit the THT site and use the Guest >Book. Dr. Mandel (50% grading issue) asked that we visit the THT site and sign his guest book. It's the least we can do, considering he was willing to share the article he had removed from the site. Susan Nixon 2nd Grade Phoenix, AZ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: ***List Etiquette*** From: Susan Nixon <susan@desertskyone.com> Date: Mon, 21 Jun 1999 14:09:54 -0700 Several people wrote about list etiquette, so I thought I would post some general rules to the whole list. With the group we have, I don't think there will be any major problems, but here it is, anyway. Please read through everything carefully before storing the message. There are things everyone on the list needs to know. Thank you. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ List Etiquette I took a few minutes and put together this list of guidelines. None of it's original. I took the best from several list owners and echo = moderators and I think this covers most of what's needed: HELP ~~~~ List-Subscribe: List-Digest: List-Unsubscribe: If you need help with anything, such as un-subscribing, just send mailto:susan@desertskyone.com. Please do not send these requests to = the list itself. REPLYING TO MESSAGES ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ If you click on the automatic reply button for whatever e-mail program you are using, your message will go to the *list*. When you reply, think = about to whom you wish the message to be sent, and change it *before* you write, if it isn't to go to the list. To delete the address, you can click on reply. Then use the mouse to highlight the address in To: that you don't want. Press delete or backspace and that address will go away. To put in a new address, you can type it, checking carefully for errors afterward, or you can cut it from the old message and paste it into the = new one. To do this, on the old message, use the mouse to highlight the part you want. Go to the Edit menu found on all e-mail programs I've seen, and click copy. Place the cursor where you would like the address to go, and click (from the Edit menu again) paste. If you have any problems with doing this, e-mail me mailto:susan@desertskyone.com. FLAMES ~~~~~~ As with most other lists, flaming or personal attacks will not be allowed and you will be directed to take such to private email with the parties involved. However, there is often a mis-understanding of what a flame actually is. = A flame is a *personal* attack on another, such as, "You're a real MORON!" (or worse). A flame is *not* a strong, but polite, disagreement with another's position. I am sure that everyone on this list will treat other members with dignity and respect. Absolutely no swearing will be tolerated. TAGLINES & SIGNATURES ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Many of the better e-mail programs give you an option for signature and/or tagline to be attached to the end of your mail automatically. Mine gives me 3 options. My son's rotates through a list he has put into the = program. Yours may do either, have one option, or not have the option at all. Please put your name, your grade level and your location, at least state, at the end of every list message. Please remember when writing that there are almost 160 of you and I am old with a faulty memory! Some of you I know from other projects in the last three years, but many of you I don't know. Please append the same signature information when you write to me personally. Taglines are the CyberSpace equivalent of a bumper sticker. They can be funny, or perhaps send a political message. Use them and enjoy them! = Most of the better mail programs support taglines and include a tagline manager or signature option. Here's an example: "Ross Perot - folksy billionaire or Ferengi in disguise? QUOTING ~~~~~~~ Quoting a message is very useful when communicating in mailing lists, and it can be done quite stylishly. *Do not, ever, just push the reply button and quote an entire message, or worse, an entire digest! It looks bad, makes your message = much more difficult to read, and costs more money for some who pay by message length. The LISTSERV is billed by traffic volume. Mickey is being very generous with us, but he too has expenses and if we cost him more than we are paying him, the rate will have to go up. Quoting 40 un-necessary lines in a message, besides looking terrible, translates to 8,000 un-necessary lines across a 200 member e-mail list. When replying to a message, it is proper to quote a small portion of the other message so that others will be able to follow the thread. It is NOT necessary, nor is it desirable to quote an entire message, or too large a portion of an original message. It is considered the height of bad form = to quote an entire message of perhaps 50 lines, then add a small reply like, "I agree." *Never* quote any part of the original poster's signature = file nor the trailer that the Listserv appends to the list. If you are forwarding a message from another list, which you feel is applicable to our discussion, please do so only with the original poster's permission. Also, remove any other addresses from the top of the message. We do not need to know all the people who have previously received the message. OWNERSHIP OF MATERIAL YOU SUBMIT ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ All original material submitted to the list remains the property of person posting it. It may not be used by any without permission of the = submitter. If you have no objections to someone using a posting, please post that at the beginning of your message. For instance, "Permission is freely given to use this information with your colleagues and students." When we brainstorm strategies and you do assignments, I will compile = those for the list members, and the strategies may be used by list members and shared with colleagues and students. That is one purpose of the list. However, nothing may be used for financial gain without the express permission of the person or persons submitting it. No exceptions. ALL CAPS ~~~~~~~~ Another Cyber sin is TYPING IN ALL CAPS. It is considered to be = shouting, and it is rude. Exceptions might be for organization, as in this e-mail. For emphasis, bracket a word in *asterisks*. HANDLES ~~~~~~~ While handles are not common on educational e-mail lists, you may see = some. Many quilters and educators both think of me as desertsky rather than Susan Nixon. That is alright with me, but on this list, please use your actual name. FORMATS & FILE ATTACHES ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Make sure your mail program is configured to send messages in ASCII, or it may be called TEXT. In other words, don't send messages in HTML, MIME or Rich Text Format (RTF). The LISTSERV does not support it. Also please do not attach files to your messages. If you wish to email an attached file to someone, send it directly. The list does not support file attachments, by my request. If you have something you think everyone needs to see, you may send it to me personally, and I will put it on the website, if possible. E-mailed file attaches are a way to transmit virus programs and trojan horses to other computers. A corollary to this is that you should *never* open an e-mailed file attachment unless it is something you are expecting, from someone you know and trust. SUBJECTS ~~~~~~~~ The subject of your message should accurately reflect the content of your message. When replying to a message, please be sure to update your = Subject field as the thread changes. Many people sort and filter their mail = based on the Subject. If your message Subject does not accurately reflect the content of your message, it's quite possible that your message won't be read by those you most want to read it! OTHER STUFF ~~~~~~~~~~~ If a situation arises where it becomes necessary to comment on a message's format or content, please leave that to the moderator (Susan Nixon). Things discussed in other echos and lists include excessive quoting, spelling errors, indentation of the left margin, problems with the origin line, etc. You will not see these things discussed openly on this list; they are handled via e-mail to the appropriate person, when necessary. I noticed that a large group on our list has someone who will remind (privately) people in the group when they respond to the list and it should have been personal.
