There is a rhythm and flow to the writing. The child's sentences almost sound like a recitation of the who-what-when-where-why pattern. An argument could be made for scoring the paper a 3. The teacher would need to examine other pieces of writing to assess the child's grasp of sentence fluency.

Conventions: 3

The child misspells many high frequency words. The transitional spelling of scorpion, outside and Texas are phonetic. Sentences begin with capitals, but end punctuation is not always correct. Grammar is standard, and no interpretation is needed to understand the text.
